What Is Vibroacoustic Therapy?

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) is a type of sound therapy that involves passing pure low frequency sine wave vibrations into the body via a device with embedded speakers. This therapy was developed in Norway by Olav Skille in the 1980s. The FDA has approved vibroacoustic therapy for increasing circulation, pain relief, and increasing mobility. Vibroacoustic therapy is being evaluated to treat a number of conditions including fibromyalgia,  and several neurological disorders such as Parkinsons Disease, cerebral palsy and Alzheimer's disease.

What are some of the benefits of Vibroacoustic Therapy?

40 years of research on vibroacoustic therapy has shown the following benefits:

Improved blood circulation

Reduced stress and anxiety

Reduced Pain

Reduced spasms and cramps

Improved range of motion

Reduction in blood pressure & improved lymphatic flow

Increased Sensory Awareness

Reduce nausea, fatigue, and depression

Deep relaxation

Are there any Contraindications?

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) is an exceptionally safe modality but there are a few instances in which it is not appropriate:

Pacemakers and other implanted devices - because there are magnets in the speakers

Acute inflammatory conditions

Hypotension

Deep Vein Thrombosis (or DVT)

Caution with pregnancy - please get Physician's approval

Recent surgery and/or an open wound since VAT speeds up circulation and blood flow which aids in healing, but if you have an open sore you want it to clot

Seizure disorders

What Does a VAT Session “Look” Like?

Vibroacoustic therapy is a soothing, relaxing experience. Before the session begins we will discuss your session goals and select the appropriate frequencies and, if applicable, music.  You will then lay down on the specially designed mat with internal speakers and relax.  Depending on the frequencies chosen you may also be given headphones. Once comfortable the session frequencies will be streamed through the mat. After the session is complete we will take a few minutes to talk about your experience and discuss any follow-up If needed. While VAT cannot cure you of any disease, it is very effective in easing symptoms of a number of conditions.
